YaYue is a major ancient court ritual music in Chinese music history. It was thought to be an instrument of government and was imbedded in social and ideological context. Toward the end of East Zhou, YaYu' function as the ceremonial music has declined. Court neglected to practice YaYue in ritual. By Western Han Dynasty, YaYue totally declined in many ways. But YaYue really never died. Confucians had preserved its beliefs and transmitting cultural precepts to its highest point. There are many valuable documents In the section of music from The book of Han. Musical instruments excavated from the Tombs of West Han provide support evidences. Eventally, secular and folk music replaced YaYue as main stream.Proface section brifely address the purpose of this research paper, current research progress and study method.There are four chapters in this research paper.Chapter one discuss the ealier development of YaYue, the origins of YaYue, and its historical background. This section is also devoted to the description of YaYue. The rise of YaYue and the decline of YaYue.Chapter two mainly exams the section of rite and music in Book of Han. The develpment of YaYue is studied by using analytical and summary skills. The modification of YaYue in chronicles of West Han Dynasty was studies too. Chapter also exams the YaYue' dance from the records of emperors.Chapter three focus on the music instrument evidences excavated from two major Han' tombs located in North and South parts of Country.Chapter four summarizes the characteristices of YaYue in West Han period.
