Since some universities and middle schools were appointed to launch pilot projects for the application of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), the research about CALL has been the hot topic in the field of foreign language teaching. Nowadays, much attention is paid to the research and practice into CALL in the world. Compared with foreign countries, the research on the applications of CALL in China, especially on the teaching of reading, is less developed. In this case, the ideas in this paper are significant to the improvement of teaching efficiency, to the all-round heightening of students'quality, and the enhancement of English teachers'ability of utilizing teaching resources.Influenced by the idea of the revolution of the College English Teaching, the aim of the research is to construct a new interactive mode of teaching English reading in the college, by taking into consideration of CALL environment. And its feasibility and effectiveness are verified through the investigation, analysis and teaching experiment. This study is made by mainly using the following methods of research: Literature Review, data analysis, Questionnaire Investigation and test. Questionnaires and valid research performed in this paper indicate that the reading class in CALL mode is beneficial to improve students'reading comprehension, stimulate students'reading interest, cultivate students'good attitude towards study and help students build up confidence in learning English. Furthermore, according to the study of the relationship between all the factors (interest, attitude and self-efficacy) and the students'reading grades, interest plays the main role in the English reading learning.Under the circumstances of CALL, teacher and students guided by computer and the vast information resources can carry out language learning and get the best learning results through the good integration of teaching contents, teaching process and computer assisting. The whole thesis is divided into six parts. The first part breifly introduces the present research situation of the English reading teaching and the schema theory that is often considered as the theoretical basis of the English reading teaching. The second part focuses on the research and development of CALL, and states the advantages and weaknesses of CALL assisting the teaching of reading in universities. The third part analyzes the current teaching condition of reading and the obstacles to college students'reading, then designs the teaching links in the CALL mode assisting the teaching of reading. The fourth part introduces the experiment of the reading teaching in CALL. In order to test the feasibility and effectiveness of the new teaching mode designed in chapter three, the author takes an eighteen-week experiment in her classes. The fifth part states the data analysis. All the data obtained are processed with SPSS and the results show that subjects in the experiment group made statistically progress in terms of reading comprehension, attitude, interest and self-efficacy. Furthermore, according to the study of the relationship between all the factors (interest, attitude and self-efficacy) and the students'reading grades, interest plays the main role in the English reading learning. The last part is about the summary and outlook of the research. It summarizes the achievements of the research and puts forward the strategies to stimulate the students'interest. Then it discusses the problems and the solutions about existed in the application of CALL mode in reading class. Although performing great potentials, multimedia and the Internet can not take the place of teacher.In a word, the new reading teaching mode can be of help to the future English reading teaching revolution and the resources that may be used in the English reading teaching are rich. Based on the findings of the study, attempts are made to explore some issues of integrating CALL into classroom instruction and meanwhile suggestions for future research are provided. |
