Abstract/Summary:
The study of verbs is one of the most complicated problems in Chinese grammar study. One of the most important means of studying verbs is dividing the verb system into small subcategories according to certain principles. Previous research has classified verbs into subcategories by situation types one of which is the momentary verb. These issues have been studying more or less by our predecessors, but the names and demarcations vary from one to another. Based on the conclusions of our predecessors, we are looking forward to improve and perfect the research of momentary verbs through meticulous and conscientious descriptions of linguistic data.In Chapter 1, a general review is collected on research status.Chapter 2 focuses on the classification of momentary verbs, basis of classification are found and similarities and differences are indicated initially. In Chapter 3 and 4, functionalist theories are employed while we analyzing and describing momentary verbs of type A and type B. While analyzing, we found that some untypical verbs from type A are derived from verb-complement structures and coordinate structures. This type of verb verbs, which is not only a word but also a phrase, has changed to this form through ages of grammaticalization.Chapter 5 focuses on sentences, sentences which have the semantic characters of moment are analyzed. The relationships between momentary verbs and momentary situations, relationships among sentence parts and conditions needed in a momentary situation are also discussed.
