Study On The Structure "Hen+AP/VP" In Modern Chinese

Based on the large-scale corpus, this paper makes the delicate description and comparison for the structure"Hen + AP/VP"by analyzing, labeling and summarizing the rules from the statistics. The study is expected to contribute to the thorough understanding about the function of"Hen", to recognize the similarities and differences between AP and VP in the structure, and to promote the research in adverbs of degree and functional shifting of word-class between adjectives and verbs. In addition, as a kind of reference, the findings are advantageous for language teaching, especially for teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Apart from the conclusion, this paper consists of six chapters.The first chapter is an introduction. It begins with the object and the significance of the research. Then we review the relative study and papers in adverbs of degree(including"Hen") and the structure"Hen + AP/VP", and find some merits and defects. Next, we list the research questions and corresponding hypotheses to definite our goals. We generalize the methodology of this research and point out the source of the corpus.The second chapter makes a concise and careful description for the forms of AP/VP in the structure based on the research on a large quantity of example sentences so as to be clear about the manifestations of the researching object. The third chapter focuses on"Hen + AP". At first, we analyze this structure in the respect of syntax and semantics. Then from the cognitive point of view, we give the explanation to the special pattern"Hen + State Adjectives". Furthermore, we elaborate the functions of"Hen"in the structure.The fourth chapter lays stress on"Hen + VP". We research and analyze the structure from the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic perspectives.The fifth chapter is the analysis on the basis of the systematic comparison between"Hen + AP"and"Hen + VP"in syntax, semantics and pragmatics, aiming at finding out the similarities and differences between AP and VP in the structure. What's more, we completely generalize the functions of"Hen".The sixth chapter is discussing about the word class after "Hen". We firstly list the different manifestations of the word class in this structure and state the method to recognize adjectives and verbs. Guided by the continuum of word class, we find out the typical members and non-typical members of AP/VP in the structure "Hen + AP/VP". Furthermore, we put the theory into practice to explain the functional shifting between adjectives and verbs.
