Graham Greene is one of the most important British writers in the past century. Greene wrote novels, essays, travel books, plays, criticism and biographies in his literary career, but what give him the greatest honor are his novels, especially his religious novels. The Power and the Glory published in 1940 is considered as one of his classic novels. This thesis aims to proceed from the realistic perspectives of the novel to analyze the author's realistic writing style and then prove the profound the value of reality by realistic approach from three perspectives: background description, plot settings, and characterization.This thesis consists of six parts. Part one introduces Graham Greene and his major works, and then introduces the present research about The Power and the Glory at home and abroad.Part two firstly takes a review of realism and the application and development of realism in literature, and then discusses the reflection of realism in the Graham Greene's works, especially in the novel The Power and the Glory. In this part, the thesis also points out that the novel is a realistic one, so that it could explore the value of reality of the novel from the perspectives of background description, plot settings, and characterization.Part three mainly discusses how background description reflects reality. Firstly, it introduces Greenland and its importance in the Greene's works, and then points out that background description in this novel plays very important role in backing the atmosphere, highlighting characters and deepening the theme of the novel. At the same time, it also reflects the author's concerning about the survival of the human conditions and the future of mankind.Part four focuses on the plot settings. The plot description is a typical feature of realistic novel and so it is in this novel. In the novel, the settings of thrilling chase-escape plot and confrontation plot give the novel interlocking suspense, and add the charm of the novel. Meanwhile it conveys serious moral theme, and arouses public awareness of the social and moral issues.According to the view of characterization, part five aims to explore that the author fully demonstrates the two sides of good and evil characters as well as the hero's own inner conflict of good and evil. Readers can see the two sides of good and evil in him. It seems absurd, but in fact, it is reality. The successful typical characterization makes the theme and practical profound of the novel more prominent.Part six is the conclusion. This thesis proceeded from the realistic perspectives of the novel to analyze the author's realistic writing style and then proved the value of reality of the typical figure, the author fully shows the people's life at the social environment of the time and the people's two sides of good and evil characters, and thus provides us with a successful model and a new idea for the creation of realistic themes.
