The Application Of Communicative Approaches To English Majors' ESL Teaching In Independent Institute

According to the teaching syllabus for the undergraduate English majors, the English language teaching is to educate the students with structural English basics and broadened cultural knowledge, who are good at using the language in communication. In contrast to the English teaching for the non-majors, the teaching for English majors emphasizes more on their practical ability to use the language in real life.In the independent institutes, the newly-emerging school of higher education, the English teaching for English majors has a lot of specialities compared with that in the state universities, such as students' poorer mastering of English basics and more focus from the school on the pass rate of examinations etc.All of these lead to the lack of practical ability of students to use English in real life, which is not in accordance with the teaching syllabus. So how can we change the improper situation in the independent institute? I think the best way is to apply the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) to it. Meanwhile, how to apply the method effectively is another problem I will discuss in the paper.First of all, I point out the principles of using CLT in the teaching process by analyzing the basic theories of Communicative Language Teaching. Then after the investigation on the teachers and students from Chong Qing Nanfang Translators College of SISU, I analyzed their opinion on the application of CLT and finally come to the conclusion that compared with traditional teaching methods, CLT benefits both teachers and students much more, and it is even more inclined to be accepted by the students who want to improve their communicative competence. Secondly, we should also be aware something when we are applying CLT, such as identifying teacher's and students'role, designing proper class activities according to the level of students, selecting the appropriate teaching materials etc.At last, we should also bear in mind that only when CLT is combined with the advantages of other teaching methods, the perfect teaching result will be ensured.
