Fang Gan was a famous poet in late Tang Dynasty. This thesis, focused on Fang Gan's life, making friends, his complex whether being a government official or a hermit, his mentality of seclusion and his mind of buddhism. On this basis, analysis the subject and artistic achievement of his poems.In the youth, Fang Gan had a talent about poem. He continued to take part in the civil service exams, but failed. So he made a choice to live in seclusion in Jinghu untill the last moment of his life. But he never give up his ideal that to be a government official through the examinations.He continued to visit the nobles, make friends with the middle and lower literaties, buddhist monks actively.In late Tang Dynasty, civil service exam was the only way to achieve ideals. Fang Gan respected this belief, difficultly ahead on this road, hoping that through the civil service exams to realize the value of his life. But because of the injustice of the exams, Fang Gan failed. At this hopeless situation, he treated poems as the exams, hoping realize the value of life by the poems.The potential psychological of his Painstaking Reciting, was still the civil service exams. He chose a haughty and honorable retreat——seclusion. This life style was poor and lonely, but it's not the main tune of Fang Gan's life. It's main rhythm was leisure and liberty. He walked into the nature and religious, to resolve the contradiction and suffering in his heart.Fang Gan has 339 poems, among these poems, a half were wrote for officials and friends, reflecting the poet's demand for progress. Fang Gan also has many poems about seclusion, landscape, objects and buddhism. No matter which subject, Fang Gan's works always revolve his life and inner world. Period decide this creative tendencies. Fang Gan had no way to overstep the sad period. The only thing he can do was writing his life and mood.Fang Gan learn Jia Dao's painstaking reciting. The artistic achievements of his poems has four aspect:the:language's delicate, the idea's ingenious, the realm's clear, thin and leisurely, and the feelings's undisturbed and mild.
