Poem generation has received considerable attentions from linguists, especially some cognitive linguists. This paper attempts to make a brief analysis of poem generation based on the cognitive theory"autonomy-dependency alignment", which was first raised by Langacker (1987) in his book Foundations of Cognitive Grammar:Theoretical Presuppositions.Autonomy and dependency is originally one pair of categories of philosophy, which refers to the unsymmetrical relationship between the two components. Langacker considers that autonomy and dependency can combine into one alignment and make one of the four factors of grammar valence. Guided by the framework of autonomy-dependency alignment, this paper analyzes the generative process of poems, which originates from the intention, that is, the autonomy components. Under the constraints of the intention expression, with the help of mental models, and through the relationship of proximity and similarity, poems are derived, that is, the dependency components. The mechanism in such process is"interrelating", which embodies the relationship of metonymy between two components in this framework. To conclude, it seems that autonomy-dependency alignment is of great value in composing poems. The study thus provides a new brand way of producing and understanding the poems, which is quite different from the traditional methods. In the research, qualitative method and holistic way have been employed. The study uses both Chinese and English poems as examples to illustrate the working process of the framework of autonomy-dependency alignment. In addition, the study of this topic not only provides a brand-new way of doing the poem research but also gives many hints to linguists and students who study linguistics for understanding language phenomena in depth such as pun, irony and jargon. Therefore, one can clearly gets the feasibility, popularity and accessibility of this framework.
