| Zhao Shu-li is one of Chinese representative authors under the new cultural background in the 1950s. This research, after the publication of The Speech, enables us to delve more deeply into these questions: how does the pursuit of modernism in the liberated region come as the result of authors'concrete practice; in what way does the modernism realized in literature works and brought out as a new literature genre. Zhao Shu- li is special not only for his practice of Maozedong's ideology of literature and art. Instead, he spent his life speaking for the peasant, reflecting on the literary concept and writing style of the New Literature after the May 4th Movement, and advocating popular literature works for ordinary people, on which based his echo to the Speech. Meanwhile, his idea of art and literature shares the outer mismatches and inner agreements with the norms of the Modern literature in China with that of Maozedong's as the core. It is for this reason the evaluation of his achievement varies in different period of Modern Literature. Much as Zhao Shu-li's Modernity is complicated and interesting, its connotation has been covert without systematic explanation due to the complicated historical context.Zhao Shu-li, through his minute description of social life, expresses his thorough understanding of the development of Chinese Modernization. His novels absorbing the new art and literature after the May, 4th Movement and folk literature and art, manifest his introspection on his choice of modernity. His novels also enrich and expand modern novels through combining the traditional cultural resources and modern spirit of rationality. Activation and modern conversion of the traditional resources of art and literature, vivid description of social life and the reflection and criticism on the Modernization process constitute the unique content of Zhao's novels. |
