Andrzej Panufnik(1913—1991) is one of the most preeminent figures in the renaissance of Polish music in the 20th century. He achieved great accomplishment in national Polish music, and meanwhile he made significant contribution in the international communication of music as well as in the development of Polish music.A comment on him goes:"No other contermporary Polish composer can replace Andrzej Panufnik as regards the importance and the part he placed in music, and, even more,in the culture of the country from which he came.Contrary to many of his colleagues, his creativity retained some Polish traits to the very end."His Twelve Miniature Studies composed in the form of suite has its unique significance.Emerged in the Baroque period, suite gradually developed into the touchstone which could represent composing techniques after centuries of evolvement.Unique in form, suite can often bear the composer's emotions.Under the principle of tonality, this composition consists of 12 pieces, which represents Panifnik's revival of the 12 tempered scale It is modified twice in 1955 and in 1964,which reflects the composer's special attention. Therefore this composition can be regarded as the crystallization of his musical style and emotions. The thesis tries to locate the composer back into a macro-background,and explores the unique features of Polish composers from a historical and geographical perspective. Through the study of the composer and his works,it interprets the position of this composition and the state of the composer. It fully vertically compares and horizontally analyzes the Twelve Miniature Studies.Through music form, tune, rhythm, tempo and performance,it endeavors to discover its rules of development.Additionally,it discusses the influences from the other works of Panifnik, and finds their commonness and peculiarities. So the composer's emotions can be better understood and grasped. This study abides by the following principles:1.Guided by dialectic materialism and historical materialism, researches are carried out objectively.2.Applying methods including theoretical study, comparative summarization and concrete case-analysis,following aesthetics in thoughts.3.Being micro-macro,multi-dimensional in concrete case-analysis,basing on the micro-study of musical form, exploring the aspects of hamony, tonality, motive, melody, to propose new viewpoints on Panifnik's composition.
