In the process of language development, the syntactic position of prepositional phrase has experienced obvious change, it used to appear behind VP, but now ,they usually used in front of them. My essay will try to find the reason from the originalform of preposition-verb, and will based on the "non-terminal" features whichall of them shared, so a core verb is required to be linked after of it. Then according to particular case, the various syntactic, semantic and pragmatic rules can be used to explain. My essay will show the general syntactic positions of PP and VP both in Ancient and Modern Chinese. and point out that the PP which stand for the starting position, reason, via, or introduce the tools all inclined to set in front of the VP; The position of PP introduced by "zai" is free; and the PP introduced by "yu" always locate after the VP.When refer to the semantic categorization of PP in Modern Chinese, we also discuss some special performance of it .such as in the sentence of "zai he li you yong(swimming in the river) ", "zai ke ding shui jiao(sleeping in the living room)",the PP can only be set in front of VP,The essay has include several parts: firstly, show the basic usage of the PP and VP both in Ancient and Modern Chinese, and compare with their characteristics; because the amount of preposition in Modern Chinese is huge, and their features are various, so the next part will classify them by the way of form and meaning; The last part is about the reason discussion of PP fronting, including syntactic, semantic and pragmatic ways, and finally prove "non-terminal" is the basis of it.
