Meiji Spirit And Sensei' Death

"Heart" is one of the late works wrote by Japanese famous writer–natumesoseki. The novel developed on the background of time changing, which is from the start of meiji to the beginning of new time. It describes the conflicts between love and friendship, egoism and morality. The work shows the intellectuals'inner spirits: contradiction, melancholy, helplessness and self-respect.The researches about "heart" and its writer are too numerous to mention individually. On the basis of former studies, this paper did some tentative researches about this great work. The author projected mainly on time spirit and heroes'inner spirit, and did some analyses and researches on the basis of writer's logicality, the relationship between meiji spirit and modern literature; furthermore, the inner connections between meiji spirit and the hero's death are also taken into consideration.The thesis starts from the analysis on the writer's Ethics, so as to have a deep exploration on ethics'connotation of the writer. In the author's opinion, natumesoseki is not a naturalist and not an idealist. Throughout the whole life of the writer, he developed what is useful or healthy and discarded what was not in these two fields. On the ground of these conclusions, we have better views on the author's motivation and the affects of ethics on his works.Secondly, the author did some Expositions on the relationship between meiji spirit and modern literature, and the Modern civilization's influences on the Modern intellectuals. In the field of literature, there are fundamental differences between meiji and taisyou literature. "Heart" reveals the transaction from modern literature to taisyou literature. Moreover, the writer described self-esteem and conceited intellectuals'image.The author develops some tentative discussions on the following aspects: firstly, the causes of K's death. Secondly, the deep meaning which come across with me. Thirdly, the Ethical of meiji spirit. Lastly, the hero went against his Ethics and died to meiji spirit. We can infer that the key to know the work–"heart" is sensei's death. There is much controversy on the sensei's death. On the one hand, some researchers believed that it is redemption to his friend's death. On the other hand, many people trust that it is go away with meiji spirit. The author is more incline to the second opinion, and on the basis of this view, did some exploration on the implication of sensei's death. In the transaction period, how to deal with various conflicts is a big problem. Consequently, it is necessary to do some researches on this novel.
