The purpose of this study are as follows:(1) to explore the mental health status and related factors of the old people in urban and rural areas of Chengdu city. (2) to explore the differences in mental health status and related factors between urban and rural areas of Chengdu city.The sample consisted of 400 old people who aged 60 above. The investigation tools contain Psychological interview method and these questionnaires :(1)Questionnaire survey of General life;(2)Symptom cheek list 90(SCL-90).The data were obtained through group testing and analyzed with SPSS16.0. Statistic methods include such as T-test,F-test,many groups used one-way ANOVA,multivariate analysis of variance.The results show that: (1) The mental health status of the 200 old people which live in urban in this study are better than the 200 old people in rural areas.(2) Factors that are at significant levels are such as education, gender, marital status, family situation and age-level. In education,the mental health status of the old people in rurul are better than the old people in urban,while the story are the opporsite so as to gender, marital status, family situation and age-level. (3)The level of mental health are varies in different groups: generally speaking, the mental health status of men are better than women in old people; the mental health status of widows and the old people who live alone at home are pooer than others; different older people in urban and rural areas of Chengdu education at scl-90 psychological self-rating scale of each factor, the differences are very significant, showing U-distribution. The level of mental health are the best high school, middle school the elderly, followed by primary schools, university-level older people, are undergraduate and the worst levels of illiteracy among the elderly; Different age levels of mental health of the elderly was inverted U-distribution. The mental health status of the 71-80 years old people, especially 71-75 years old are pooer than other age groups.
