With the modernization , informationization and globalization , contemporary life style leads to cultural convergence. The graphic design, notable with fashion and innovation, highlights the characteristics of regional and national culture as well as the international design tendency in order to enhance the nationalization, diversity and individualization of artistic design. The originality of graphic design emphasizing national culture can embody the concept and fashion of modern graphic design and reflect diverse characteristics of historical culture and aesthetic orientation of different nations and regions, and the artistic elegance can be fully displayed with the close combination of traditional culture and modern graphic design. Hence, it is significant for the development of regional modern graphic design to explore the essence of national cultureand reflect the spirit of the times.The main purpose of the research is to enhance the conservation and heritage of Monoglian traditonal culture in the way of graphic design, so that the characteristics of national region can be fully displayed. The research focuses on the application of Mongolian traditonal graphic symbols in modern graphic design, which is assumed to aid the exploration of new manifestation of graphic design with regional features, the relationship between Mongolian traditonal graphic symbols and modern graphic design, as well as the similarity of their elements so as to enlighten modern graphic design on the basis of traditional culture. Besides, some systematic research has been conducted in the invaluable aspects of Mongolian traditional culture such as their outstanding national spirit, abundant graphic elements, etc. Moreover, it probes into the recombination of the spiritual and material elements of Mongolian tradtional culture and modern design concept, forging a new national style with characteristics of the times. The research is significant to inherite and promote Mongolian national culture and enrich the ideological content and artistic language of modern graphic design.As a highly practical discipline, graphic design emphasizes practice and function, as well as the research in skills and techniques. Some efforts are taken to explore the application of Mongolian traditonal graphic symbols in the modern graphic design by the writer, whose successful design cases are used in the thesis as the majority of the illustrations in this thesis. Base on the writer's experience , the research focuses on the analysis of design application and methods, and summarizes some exploratory viewpoints, which are expected to provide instructional guidance for the designs in the future. As to the research methods, the document and illustration anaylsis are combined as the basic method, as well as the combination of reasoning and pracitical cases. The comparison is also applied in some parts.The thesis is organized into three sections, which progressively probe into the application of Mongolian tradtional graphic symbols in modern graphic design.Based on the tendency of modern graphic design, the first section generalizes the tendency of diversity as well as the localization and globalizaiton, which is closely related to the theme of this thesis. As to the localization, it is believed that the development of graphic design has to be on the basis of national culture, using traditional graphic symbols for reference, so that the characteristics of national regions can be reflected. The globalization means that with modern design methods, the traditional graphic symbols can be used to reflect the features of the times so that this national symbolic language will be acceptable in a broader extent, in which the combination of modenization and tradtion, and the mixture of Chinese and Western styles can be accomplished.The second section expounds on the philosophical and artistic concept of Mongolian traditional graphic symbols. Firstly, the ideological content and aesthetic orientation of these traditional symbols are analysed to abtain the artistic conception of the graphic symbols. Secondly, the modelling features of the symbols are analyzed to summarize the forms for reference. The application of traditional symbols based on these two aspects are considered more profound and accurate.The third section is the main part of the thesis, which reflects the essential research achievement. From the angle of design application and methods, Mongolian traditional graphic symbol character, graph, and color are compared with the three elements of graphic design in their application. Therefore, some exploratory viewpoints are hatched and new design application theories are concluded: fonts design and figures of Mongolian character; the application of modern design methods in traditional figures and generalization and abstract refinement as well as the extension of artistic conception of traditional symbols; the combination of traditional and modern colors.The research has significance in the instructional practice of modern graphic design with Mongolian traditional culture as the basis of the originality and enlightment. It is believed that in this way the modern graphic design of Inner Mongolia will display its regional features and characteristics.
