With the development of globalization and China's reforming and opening, the industry of tourism grows rapidly. With the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games approaches, more and more foreign tourists come to China to feel its unique culture and tourist attractions. So it is very important to give them a good translation of Chinese tourism materials, especially related to the introduction of scenic spots, in order to let them understand and appreciate it. But unfortunately, invalidity of translation may constantly prohibit the correct understanding of target readers, and finally make intrusion on the development of tourism industry. The present thesis applies the Functionalist Translation Theory into the C-E translation of tourism materials and is simultaneously guided under the principle of combining theory and practice & theory and reality. It also proposes some appropriate translation techniques by analyzing some existed problematic points which confuses us today in order to improve the development of the translation of tourism materials. To study the above-mentioned problems, the author has made a special trip to the Mount Hengshan and Zhangjiajie to collect the tourism materials (including the materials of the introductions of scenic spots and tourist brochures), and consulted foreign teachers about the English version. She cites the confused English version in the thesis and has analyzed these problems, founding that the translation problems are mainly from the wrong comprehension of language, pragmatics and culture. The thesis will be divided into five chapters.Chapter one has generally provided a brief introduction to the study in terms of its research background and objective, scope and methodology and the structure of the thesis.Chapter two presents Functionalist Translation Theory, as the theoretical foundation of the research, which is analyzed in detail. Then, it discusses the application and relevant studies of the theory, and its practical meaning to the translation of tourism materials.Chapter three reviews the tourism literature studies abroad and in China, and some relevant studies of the translation of tourism materials have been carried out from textual function, cross-cultural analysis and pragmatic approach.Chapter four applies the framework of Functionalist Translation Theory to the translation of Chinese tourism materials. Firstly, it analyzes the existed problems in linguistic translation, cross-cultural translation and pragmatic translation and then tries to solve the above-mentioned problems by proposing some translation techniques for Chinese tourism materials. In the conclusion, the present author generalizes the major findings and the limitations of the present thesis with suggestions for future research.
