J. L. Austin, one ofleading figures in the analysis of ordinary language, fashioned a new way of doing philosophy named as 'linguistic phenomenology'. He ever said, "When we examine what we should say when, what words we should use in what situations, we are looking again not merely at words but also at the realities we use the words to talk about, we are using a sharpened awareness of words to sharpen our perception of the phenomena". He resolved some traditional philosophical problems by using 'linguistic phenomenology'.In this thesis, firstly, by turning to J. L. Austin's significant essay of 'a plea for excuse', his some main points on 'linguistic phenomenology' were introduced, Then, in 'Sense and Sensibilia', by means of 'linguistic phenomenology', Austin analyzed Ayer's sense-data theory and his principles of Empirical Foundationalism deeply. In final chapter, Austin's 'linguistic phenomenology' as a way of doing philosophy was briefly evaluated. |
