In Early Tang Dynasty, the popularity of singing and composing feast both in the court and in local districts made banquet poems the major part of the Early Tang Dynasty poetry, especially in the court poetry branch. Although quite a few works lacked certain distinguishing feature due to their ingratiation and standardization, banquet poetry is still of great research value in poetry development and in its reflection of the lives and spirits of the literates. However, since most present discussions revolve only around the style of the poetry circle in a certain period of the Early Tang Dynasty or some of the poet groups, or the cultural phenomena, comprehensive researches on the Early Tang Dynasty banquet poetry are somehow insufficient. This article tries a systematic discussion on Early Tang Dynasty banquet poetry from several aspects such as singing and composing feast overview, creators of banquet poems, related topics, poetry style, content and spirit. Not only does this article contain investigations on the founding background, literary activities and social customs of that era, it also focuses on poem texts to analyze the language, sentence pattern and rhyme scheme of banquet poetry and to further study the attitudes of the poets and the social trend of thought reflected in banquet poetry. And finally, to obtain a relatively comprehensive, clear recognition and an objective, fair judgment.
