Abstract/Summary:
Chinese people pay close attention to man-land relationship since ancient times. As modern western knowledge was known to the eastern, the theory of man-land relationship, which is an important part of modern western geography, were introduced to the Chinese. Many scholars were influenced by the theory, and they found them completely different from Chinese traditional theory. In Chinese tradition, man and environment are balanced; but in the west, they are opposite and dualistic. It was the theory of man-land relationship that made the Chinese traditional thoughts transited for the modern western theories and finally made geography separate from history to stand on her own feet. Many scholars joined the process. Professional geography research institutions were founded in the country, magazines of geography research were published, and lots of universities set up the department of geography, which pushed forward the research of man and land.On the base of the recent achievements of the researchers, the introduced process of the theory would be expounded and the influences would be discussed in the thesis, according to the translations and the works from late Qing Dynasty to middle 1930s.
