British North American Massachusetts colony was set up by a group of Puritans who were unable to put up with religious persecution of their motherland. These Puritans had firm and pure faith. They worked hard and led a simple life. By virtue of the electorate's confidence in God to overcome all the difficulties, they came to a complete foreign place cross the big ocean and tried to set up favorable"City upon A Hill"through their own efforts so as to achieve freedom in belief and carry out God's truth. However, when they started to practice their own ideals, they had to take the same religious autocratic policy. Church-based official Puritan Congregation took this religious persecution to Baptist, Quaker and other denominations for a long period of time. This situation was serious in the colony of New England region especially in Massachusetts. As we all know, the United States had a strong religious atmosphere and the vast majority of its citizens had religious freedom. Its religious denominations were numerous. However, believe it or not, so many denominations could get along very well in the same land for a long time. So, why did the various denominations trend to be tolerance from the beginning repellence? What was the far-reaching impact of this spirit of tolerance such as to the established the principle of religious freedom by the government, national daily life as well as the country's political activities? The American national traits formed during the early colonial era were the background of my article. I focus on birthplace of"New England spirit"---- Massachusetts. I will use historical materialism of Marxism as a guide and use theory and methods about history and religion for reference. I will try my best to analysis the change from repellence to tolerance of Massachusetts'religious relations, comprehensively and objectively.
