| After several hundred years' development,Chinese films are now enjoying an increasing popularity across the world. However, compared with the imported English films, especially those from Hollywood, the export of Chinese films is far and few between indeed. The undesirable translation of film titles and subtitles may account for the sorry situation. In the final analysis, the linguistic and cultural factors and the translator's language proficiency play the decisive role in film translations. In the thesis, the author adopts Lefevere's rewriting theory to study the translation of Chinese film titles. In his theory there are three key terms:ideology, poetics and patronage. As a descriptive study, the research illustrates the influences of a few concrete factors on film title translations. To be specific, the study on ideological factors is to find out how we follow the ideology in the target society to produce a presentable film title.Poetics has two components:literary devices and the role of literature.Literary devices will be approached from the following three dimensions:the structural characteristics of both English film titles and Chinese film titles, rhetoric devices and the differences between a parataxis language and a parataxis language.Patronage is the most crucial factor that can affect the translation result because the patron has the loudest voice in the choice of the title. The patron in the study refers to the producer and the distributor who makes film export possible.Based on the analysis above, the author finally attempts to establish a model on the basis of Lefevere's rewriting idea to illustrate the Chinese film title translation process. |
