| Subtitling is a new branch of translation in that it boasts both the common nature of translation and its own uniqueness.Considering the technical and contextual constraints on subtitling, the subtitler may take pains to work out high-quality subtitles.According to the relevance theory, focusing on cognition and communication, the two preliminary conditions for relevance are:(1) an assumption is relevant in a context to the extent that its contextual effects in this context are large;(2) an assumption is relevant in a context to the extent that the effort required to process it in this context is small(Sperber & Wilson,1995).Translation as an interpretive use of language, can be defined as an act of communication. So the translator is guided by the principle of relevance when comprehending the original and translating it.Subtitling should be undertaken in the pursuit of optimal relevance to guarantee successful communication.Guided by the relevance theory, the present paper analyzes the subtitling of the film-Red Cliff, and has worked out some practical subtitling strategies which are further illustrated by examples from the subtitling of the film. |
