This thesis mainly focuses on adjective/noun and adverb/adjective collocations. Based on the CLEC evidence, the present study aims to find out Chinese learners' deficiency in the performance of adjective collocations and shed some light on the presentation of adjective collocation information in ECLDs so as to make them better adapted to the actual needs of Chinese learners. The present study is based on three kinds of corpora,i.e.the native English corpora BNC and LOB,the EFL learner corpus CLEC,as well as the native Chinese corpus CGC.With the aid of EA and CIA approaches,it is found that Chinese learners mainly have two kinds of problems i.e.the overt errors and the covert inappropriateness in the performance of adjective collocations. Most cases of Chinese learners' explicit errors of adjective collocations can be ascribed to the joint influence of L1 transfer, communication strategy, and overlooking cooccurrence restrictions of collocations. The overuse of general adjectives and general intensifiers reveal their covert deficiency in the use of adjective collocations. The ECLDs,especially the domestic ECLDs are found with some defects in presenting adjective collocation information.Firstly, they are lack of systematic warning notes on collocation errors of Chinese learners.Secondly, they are less informative in presenting the intensifying adjective collocates of nouns.Thirdly, they ignore Chinese learners' overuse and underuse phenomena on adjective collocations. Fourthly, they are with inadequate supply of adjective collocations for the specific needs of Chinese learners. Finally the present study proposes some suggestions with samples for improving the presentation of adjective collocations in the microstructure, mediostructure, and megastructure of ECLDs by various operational lexicographic forms.
