Theresa is an important character in Typical American written by Gish Jen, Asian American writer. She is the combination of eastern and western cultures, not perfect, but promising.This thesis analyses the character of Theresa from the perspective of multiculturalism. It includes five chapters. Chapter one briefly introduces the author, the novel, multiculturalism and literature review. Based on the employment of multiculturalism, Chapter two analyzes the character of Theresa in Chinese culture, such as her benevolence, strong responsibility for family, typical concept of success, chastity and sacrifice for family. Chapter three illustrates the character of Theresa in western culture from the aspects of independence and pioneering spirit. In Chapter four, Theresa, a"typical American", blends the traditional Chinese culture and American value. Chapter five is the conclusion.
