| Parody is a common linguistic and artistic phenomenon in our daily life. But most people don't truly understand and appreciate parodies. For a better understanding and appreciation of parodies, this thesis sets out to find out the specific goals of parodist and the strategies they adopt, which answer two questions:why do the parodists parody and how do they parody. After categorization of parodies according to their distribution, the specific goals of the parodists are found in examples, with the help of contextual factors like producer, recipient, media, subject etc. Then, the strategies of the parodists are introduced as the style manipulation, which consists of the application model and the imitation model. Under the application model, the original style is employed to either a compatible subject or incompatible subject depending on the parodist's goal;under the imitation model, the original style is imitated either in a straight way or in a distorted way depending on the parodist's goal. The author details the style manipulation in relation to the goals of the parodists in larger discourses in terms of stylistic analysis. It is found that the goals of parodists are diversified, which can be to recommend products or service,to suggest content and attract readers,to ridicule or criticize the original or the social phenomenon,to amuse or entertain people and so on,that the style manipulation is not a simple imitation but the strategy of parodists to achieve their goals, and that the strategy of the parodists is corresponding to their goals. It is suggested that parody has both an imitational side and an invention side. Imitation lies in the similarity in style between the parodic and the parodied.Invention exists in the innovative strategy that parodists use.The research contributes to the understanding and appreciation of parodic works, the acquiring and application of parody as a strategy or means.Meanwhile, the method in this research is also a good reference to similar researches. |
