This thesis is a professsional study on one of the adherents named Dandang in Ming dynasty. It consists of four chapters:The first chapter introduces Dandang and his travel experience, mainly from the perspective of social background, personal experience, travelling and overall evaluation. With the special social background of the dynasty transition and buddhist escapism, this section discusses the communication between Dandang and Dong Qi chang, Chen Jiru, Xu Xiake, moreover, explores the final influence of their communication upon Dandang's calligraphy style.The second section first presents the history and change of discussing art with"buddhism", arguing the deep cultural origin of buddhism's intervention with art in the speicl historitical background of the end of Ming and the beginning of Qing. Also the artistic features of buddhism's intervention with calligraphy and painting. What's more, this section goes to the topic of the art thought of Dandang's"Union of poemism and buddhism", generalizing his specific opinion and arguing mode.The third section unfolds in four sub-chapters, specificly, the characteristics of Dandang calligraphy's style, the forming process of Dandang calligraphy's style, the art of Dandang calligraphy and the comparison of Dandang's calligraphy and BaDaShanRen's. In this section, the author attampts to explore the ways how Dandang's style is formed from the perspectives of personal experience, travelling, geographic culture, the history of master and education and the social features. Meanwhile, they are compared from the pen and ink, structure, froming reasons and so on.The fourth section cheifly makes an attempt to probe into Dandang's inheritation and development of Dong Qichang's calligraphy. This exploration will be made from the overall history of calligraphy, especially the developing history of grass style. Also, the significance of inheritation and development in the history of calligraphy is made clear. Furthermore, the pros and cons of Dandang's calligraphy is presented. This section states the several advantages and disadvantages, then put the emphasis on the reasons why they exist, especially the significance of the advantages and disadvantages upon the present calligraphy.Dandang is an important calligrapher, painter and poet of adherents of Ming dynasty. The present thesis explores Dandang's calligraphy thought, style and his great achievement, taking his opinions towards poemism and painting as reference to illustrate Dandang's thought. In the end, the author puts forward his own argument on the research and significance of Dandang's calligraphy.
