Today is an era of information, and news appears especially important. Linguists around the world have conducted research on news language, the most important communicative element in news hoping to identify some underlying rules and help make the news design more scientific.As a very important subject in linguistics, especially in pragmatics, presupposition can be applied in news language. Most relevant studies focus on the analysis of the use of presupposition in news headlines, while this thesis argues that presupposition can also be applied in leads, news texts, news information and news structure.Based on the presupposition theory and using qualitative study as the main method, this thesis identifies the definition, characteristics, types of presupposition as well as features of news language as breakthrough points to investigate the application and pragmatic functions of presupposition in news.This thesis finds that presupposition is broadly applied in news including news headlines, leads and news texts. Presupposition contributes greatly to news language and news information. Presupposition can make news language more concise and diverse. It also can enlarge the information quantity of news, balance news information structure, make news information more coherent and help news form a good macrostructure.This thesis explores the pragmatic functions of presupposition in news language to find out the positive roles played by presupposition. It can help news writers obtain a better understanding of how presuppositions work and thus consciously employ such a linguistic device to make news design more scientific.
