Zhao Ji, the emperor of Song dynasty, namely Songhuizong, was an important person in the history of Chinese painting. Chinese painting has reached a quite high level for his affection for painting art, especially the development of meticulous birds-and-flowers painting which was up to the peak of the history of archaic birds-and-flowers painting. With no doubt to his art achievement, Zhao Ji made an active and important contributions to the development and maturity of meticulous painting of birds-and-flowers, promoted birds-and-flowers painting of Song to form a unique art style——Xuanheti style. Since Song dynasty, this kind of style with refinement, richness and reality became the mainstream of meticulous painting of birds-and-flowers until now. At the same time, he led the art institution named Xuanhehuayuan, and he established the first ancient art college named Huaxue, progressed the Chinese painting forward.This paper focused on studying the painting and contribution of Zhao Ji to summarize the valuable experiences for latter-day meticulous painting of birds-and-flowers, which has particular theoretical and pragmatic meaning.
