"Hua Yue Hen"is the first saga Chinese novel ,whose leading characters are the prostitutes. It's author is Wei Xiuren, who is one of the writers on behalf of the Xiaxie novel in Wan Qing dynasty. He was born in the twenty-three year of Jiaqing era, and died in the twelve year of Tongzhi era. Through his life he experienced three stages: studying at home to seek an official position, touring eight years for his survive, going back to his home with great regret. His life was full of frustrations. He tried his best to get an official, but he failed again and again. So he knew very well about the heart of intellectuals in the feudal society."Hua Yue Hen"is an important work which is reflected his heart very well. This novel was completed in twice. Firstly, he wrote forty-four chapters and secondly he wrote eight chapters. This saga novel was firstly carved in the fourteenth year of Guangxu era. It was made of the things that the auther experienced by himself. Two pairs of the main characters in the nove were the antetypes which were from the praxis. Besides"Hua Yue Hen", he also wrote many other works which included textual research on inscriptions of classics on stone,collections of poems and essays, mixed works and so on.The author's state of existance and spirit affects the ideological connotation of"Hua Yue Hen", which displays the connotation of society and feelings. On social connotation, the work displays the dissatisfaction with turbulant reality in Wanqing, the dissantisfaction with the dark of officialdom and the corruption of affairs of state,the lash about nowadays, the miserable destiny of the prostitutes in Wanqing. However, under these facts we can see the desolate mentality of the author. Affected by this mentality, the work shows the strong sentimentalism. On feeling connotation, the work emphasizes the importance of feelings, true feelings, blind love and the eternal value feelings. Why did the author emphasize the value of feelings? Because he feeled very helpless when he faced the dark reality. In fact, all these showed that the author tried his best to release his bad mentality and showed that the author lacked the good friends. About the arts, the novel makes great achievements which are manifested mainly in meticulous description, parallel instructure, plaintive and gorgeous language. Especially many Poem Phrases in the novel make it present lyric tendency. However, excessive Poem Phrases also damage the art of the novel,which we can not neglect.
