A Study Of The Translator's Subjectivity In Guo Moruo's Poetry Translation

Guo Moruo was an eminent translator as well as an eminent poet,novelist and dramatist.He was not only productive in translating foreign poems,but unique in some viewpoints of poetry translation.As an active translation theorist and practitioner,Douglas Robinson originally put forward somatics of translation.He believes that translators are never neutral,impersonal transferring devices.On the contrary,translators' personal experiences,such as emotions,motivations, attitudes and associations are not only allowable in the formation of a translated text,they are indispensable.Thus,in translation studies,the theory of somatics of translation took personal embodiment into consideration and entailed the translator's subjectivity.This thesis will examine the association of somatics of translation with translator's subjectivity.The representation of translator's subjectivity in Guo's translation theory and practice are studied from this new approach,namely Robinson's somatics of translation.On the one hand,by analyzing Guo's poetry translation theories,such as "flavor translation","creative translation","emotional projection of translator" and so on,this research aims at exploring the translator's subjectivity embedded in them.On the other hand,with respect to Guo's specific poetry translation practices, this thesis selects some typical instances and attempts to analyze how his translator's subjectivity is manifested.Finally,the author draws a conclusion that Guo Moruo,being a poet as well as a translator,leaves his "somatic" traces in his poetry translation theory and practice.
