Manhattan Transfer,John Dos Passos' first masterpiece in the 1930s,is considered as the most innovative and original novels in the canon of American literature.Although the novel is bound with intertextual features, very few studies have ever been done on it from the perspective of intertextuality. This study seeks to decode Manhattan Transfer's unique charm in early 20th century from a new perspective of interpretation.First of all,the thesis is devoted to a summary about the orientation of and the category in intertextual research during resent years and a brief introduction of Manhattan Transfer as well as its feasibility of intertextual reading.Secondly, the thesis seeks to explore the intertextual features by way of such concrete forms of intertextuality as quotation, allusion, pastiche to illustrate how the different intertexts are inter-referential to each other and their functions in constructing theme and enriching meanings of the novel. Finally, through the intertextual reading, the conclusive part discusses the intertextual features of Manhattan Transfer and its high artistry and in-depth significance.
