It is never exaggerating to say that LunYu is the most influential book in the history of Chinese civilization, producing great effects on the Chinese and the world's people for thousands of years. It has been translated into many languages and many researches have been conducted about this book from various perspectives. One obvious characteristic of this great book is its particular style—the quotation form. Therefore the large quantities of verbs denoting "saying" are used, whose translation will be aimed at in this research. With the help of the parallel corpus, the quantitative analysis of the verbs denoting "saying" in different translations is conducted to reinforce the qualitative analysis made in the study. The major findings are as follows:(1) Based on Halliday's classification, the verbs denoting "saying" in the translation can be grouped into four categories,i.e.the neutral type, the descriptive type, the evaluative type and the metaphorical type, among which the neutral type of verbs appear with the highest frequency. And it is shown that Ku Hungming translated the verbs in a more diverse manner, compared with the other two translators,James Legge and D.C.Lau.(2) There are a larger number of verbs denoting "saying" in English versions than in Chinese version of LunYu.Therefore,it can be inferred that a direct match between such Chinese verbs and the corresponding English translated verbs does not exist in all such verbs.(3) The slight differences existing among the Chinese verbs with similar meanings are not manifestly shown in the translations, although the translators have transferred the general meaning of the source language without distorting the intended meaning.
