Hemingway is one of the greatest American writers in the twentieth century. His works has caught imagination of so many readers, and studies and critics on his works are flourishing all the time. With his unique artistic style and famous Iceberg Theory, Hemingway has exerted profound influence on European and American literature.Hemingway's personal life experience laid solid foundation for his works as well as his trademark"Iceberg Theory". Hemingway volunteered to serve in the battlefield after the World War I broke out, and later he worked as a war correspondent in World War II and the Spanish Civil War, during which the cruel nature of the war and the disillusion after it tortured Hemingway both physically and mentally. However, Hemingway was not a thorough pessimist in spite of the fact that his family life was not always cordial and he was inflicted with numerous wounds or diseases later in life. He traveled a lot in his life and was fascinated with bull fighting, big game hunting, and deep-sea fishing, etc. In these activities, Hemingway challenge man's courage, strength and tenacity, and his life experiences influenced his perception of the nature of world. Reflected in his works, the nature of world is characterized by brutality, absurdity and nada, as well as the predominant question of how can man deal with the harsh nature. In his works, Hemingway portrayed his"code hero"who does not indulge in pessimism or desperation. Therefore, with enormous courage and stamina, they bear the pain, face the test of death, and keep their dignity. They either demonstrate good self-control and style in suffering, or face death with resolution, or fight with strong will against odds and fate. Upholding man's dignity and honor, code heroes show their"grace under great pressure". Their traits show the positive factors in man's nature.
