| Drawing upon insights gained from the previous studies,this paper proposes an adaptation-based account of translator's stance in translating illocutionary force carried in the SLT(the source language text) within the framework of Vesrhcueren's Theory of Linguistic Adaptation.It aims at providing a new perspective of studying translation.Inspired by the idea that catching the illocutionary force of the utterer is of vital importance to facilitate the success of human communication,the author makes an effort to analyze in what way it can be translated adequately and appropriately.After reviewing critically the previous research,the author has made a hypothesis that it is translator's stance that determines the way in which the translation of illocutionary force is made.Then,the working definition of translator's stance is suggested to make the focal object clear.Because "Using language must consist of the continuous making of linguistic choices,consciously or unconsciously,for language-internal and/or language-external reasons",the author adopts Theory of Linguistic Adaption as his theoretical foundation,discusses its explanatory power,and sets up a two-dimensional theoretical framework in order to analyze how translator's stance can influence the translation of illocutionary force.The author holds that the process of stance-taking in translating illocutionary force happens in his adaptation to the communicative context,which is composed of the extra-linguistic context and the intra-linguistic context.Therefore,in order to examine the verity of the offered hypothesis,the theoretical framework is established in two aspects.One is the Translator's Stance in Extra-Linguistic Adaptation;the other is the Translator's Stance in intra-Linguistic Adaptation.In the first dimension,the author mainly examines the translator's stance from three angles,which are:the adaption to the mental world,to the social world,and to the physical world.In the other one, translator's stance is studied at three different linguistic levels,namely,the lexical level,the sentential level,and the discourse level.These different angles or levels. provide the concrete theoretical basis to study in various translation examples how translator's stance influences the translation of illocutionary force in the process of adaption.This thesis concludes,through qualitative discussion and analysis,that Translator's stance is sure to be embodied in translation process and exerts influence on the process of adaptating to the communicative context,and consequently,determines the translation of the illocutionary force. |
