Functional grammar interprets language as social semiotic system, which divides into semantics,lexico-grammatical and phonological system. The semantic system is realized by three metafunctions of language.Interpersonal metafunction is a strand of function running throughout the text that expresses the writer's relationship with the reader or the relationship between the speakers, and the writer's attitude towards the subject matters.Interpersonal meaning at discourse level is mainly realized by the use of mood and modality at the lexicogrammatical level, and through key at the phonological or prosodic level.Phonological figure is one of the most important components of rhetorical stylistics. It studies the pattern of the combination of phonemes and its style effects.Appropriate usage of phonological figures may have great effects on the highlight of the theme, birth of certain emotional effects and of strong style effects. So it is of great significance to study the effects of the phonological figures in the literary works on the tapping of the hero's character, expressing of the hero's attitude and the further research on the realization of the interpersonal meaning in the discourse based on the theory of interpersonal meaning. The phonological figures in Ulysses have been the weakest aspect in Joycean studies, and the field on studies of interpersonal meaning through phonological elements is nearly a blank. This thesis takes Halliday's theory of interpersonal meaning as the theoretical basis, using Plett's pattern of phonological figures, analyzes the structure, function and operational mechanism of the phonological figures—segmental of licences and equivalences in the whole novel and tones in episode twelve, proves that the unique phonological figures in Ulysses have great effects on the realization of the identity, status and attitude of the characters in the novel.
