The traditional Chinese culture has a historical background, and the classical literature, especially the elegant, beautiful, and deep classical poetry, is one of the shiniest stars. The classical poetry is a very important element in the history of Chinese literature, and influences the literature of the world at the same time. As the source of Chinese literature and the ancestor of classical poetry, The Book of Songs is the earliest anthology, which is in rather important position in Chinese civilization. The English translation of The Book of Songs is a window for westerners to understand and appropriate Chinese culture. For many years, scholars, poets, and translators around the world are offering great contribution to the translation of classical Chinese poetry, and at the same time, giving various translation theories in translating classical Chinese poems. The translating of The Book of Songs begins from the middle of 18th century, and many translations come into being. Because image, which is the carrier of the beauty in classical Chinese poetry, is viewed as the soul in the poems, the translation of image is a unavoidable standard for a successful translation. This thesis studies Arthur Waley's unrhymed version first published in 1937 under the image theory in cognitive linguistics, and compares the translation theory of Waley and the cognitive linguistics, in order to study the differences theoretically and practically. Because the image is a broad perception, this these concentrates the point on the translation study of the love songs. Because love is one of the strongest and most beautiful emotions of human beings, which contains colorful content, and can impulse the same emotion reflect in different cognition and culture background, it is an ideal study object. This thesis uses the image theory in cognitive linguistics, especially the culture linguistics in recent years, to analyze the English translation of the love songs in The Book of Songs, in order to study the image transmission in a new view. With the study, we can find the implication and the limitations of these theories in practice, and hope to implicate the translation practice.
