A Study Of The Paranomastic Glosses From Han Shu Noted By Yan Shigu

Paranomastic glosses as a way of textual exegesis,is use cognates which have similarities or transference both in sounds and meanings to gloss.This is a method often appeared in the notes of ancient books.Yan Shigu also utilized a huge amount of it in his Han Shu Zhu.This paper takes the systematic theory of the Chinese lexicon as the theoretical guide,uses the comparative cross motivation,semantic components analysis,statistics and so on as the main methods.In order to take an all-round analysis about words of one syllable in Han Shu Zhu,we also refer to documentary language materials of Pre-Qin,the West and East Han Dynasties,and those interpretative materials made by later generations.Then we get 375 sets of words which have paranomastic relations,on the basis of comprehensive surveys,we analyze the phonological and semantic relations of the 375 sets of words,collect the exegesis terms used by Yan Shigu,and at last,conclude the value and deficiency of the paranomastic glosses from Han Shu noted by Yan Shigu.In Han Shu Zhu,Yan Shigu had realized that sound and meaning were mutually dependent,and he had consciously shaken off the restrain of the font.He used lots of terms such as "sound and meaning are same", "both sound and meaning are same","sounds are close","meaning is similar" to explain the phenomenon of this homology.His notes reflected the simple truth about his linguistic thought.It had a big influence on the theory of "seeking meaning phonetically" which presented in Qing Dynasty.This paper consists of five parts:The first chapter of the thesis makes a brief introduction of Yan Shigu's life and his works,then explains the motives and significance of this study,points out the language resources and scales,at last defines the meaning of paranomastic glosses.The second and third chapter mainly analyze the materials of paranomastic glosses in Han Shu noted by Yan Shigu.Then point out the phonological relations,the semantic relations between the words for annotating and being annotated,collect the terms glossed by Yan Shigu.We use statistics to compute proportion of members of the phonological relations in the total paranomastic glosses materials.The forth chapter summarizes the value and practical meaning of the paranomastic glosses from Han Shu noted by Yan Shigu.At last,the conclusion is a reflection on how to make further researches on this topic.
