On Succession And Innovation In Creation Of Hollywood Musical Film

Musical film is one of the most popular genre films. Since May 1927, the Oscar Academy Award for Best Picture has been awarded to ten musical films in all 81 sessions. Particularly in the 1960s, nearly half of the Best Picture Oscar films were Hollywood musical films. The reason for the success of Hollywood musical films is closely related to their creative producing methods. This thesis tries to analyze the relationship between Hollywood musical film and Broadway musical and the creative producing methods of Hollywood musical film, by studying the Hollywood musical film adapted from Broadway Musical.There are four chapters in this thesis. Chapter one discusses the origins of Broadway and Hollywood, and focuses on three aspects: the impact of the source of Hollywood musical film, the creating style and type of Hollywood musical film, and the similarities and differences between musical and musical film arts. Chapter two analyzes how did the traditional Hollywood musical film adapted from musical inherit the success of musical and use advantages of film to create. This chapter has included the circumstances of sublimation in traditional musical film; artful picturizaion of musical; the method of talents transformation from Broadway to Hollywood. Chapter three analyzes the innovation and breakthrough of the modern Hollywood musical film in the adaptation process. This chapter stresses on the innovation of plot and role in musical film, the breakthrough of songs and dance elements and style of representation. Chapter four studies the value of the adaptation of Hollywood musical film from Broadway musical. Based on the analysis of this thesis, it discusses the inspiration to the creation of China musical film from the creative producing method of Broadway musical film.
