Study On The Narrative Tension In Ai Wei's Novels

Ai Wei emerged as an excellent novelist at the end of the 21^st century. Faced with the new literary background resulted from the changes of the whole nation in 1990s last century, that the voice of 'literature is equal to the expression of oneself' and 'writing is one of commodities' has been higher and higher; that literature has becoming as the accessory of economy; that more and more writers have abandoned themselves to self-worship, Ai Wei has undertook the mission to explore further into the experience of the whole nation and history , and disclose the real situations of human beings , creating a magic but real world with his tremendous imagination and poetry words.'Tension' as a physical concept was firstly used in 'new criticism', and then was introduced into the theory of narrative. As a way of thinking and a method of criticizing, its essential points is the Dialectics, which means there is a sort of tension as long as two or several parts resist and interact with each other. In the light of this, narrative tension and its movement exists in most parts of Ai Wei's novels, such as the content, the way of narrative, even the whole style. Thus, my thesis is going to seek the formation and movement of narrative tension in Ai Wei's novels based on the theory of tension.Based on the above, the thesis firstly put Ai Wei into the current background, by comparison, to discuss his outstanding writing skills, profound understanding of human beings and the value of his writing. In the introduction the thesis also gives a summary about current studies on Ai Wei's novels and analyzes the possibility using the theory of tension to study his novels. Then, the thesis is trying to discuss the formation of narrative tension and its richness in terms of the content and the way of narrative respectively.
