With fast development of high technology and the reform of college English teaching and learning, teaching model of English is being converted into individualized study methods and autonomous learning ability on the part of students. Many college English textbooks have been released since Chinese universities began teaching English as foreign language to non-English majors in the 1980s and the Chinese Ministry of Education published its College English Curriculum Requirement and revised for at least four times. Textbook is so important for both teachers and students that we need to assess each textbook as it is the source of teachers'teaching and of students'learning. Thus the crucial aspects of textbook, as well as the assessment of textbook, are lying in front of our teachers.This thesis tries to compare two sets of college English textbook which are written in accordance with the new Requirements and advocate more on multimedia learning resources. They are New Horizon College English and New Era Interactive English. Thus the purpose of this thesis is to find out the features of good course material and aspects for improvement, and then to shed some suggestions on the writing of next generation of textbook with multimedia intervention.The thesis consists of five parts to conduct the comparative study on two sets of college English textbook in mainland China.The first introduction part explains the background and significance of the study and introduces the purpose and main structure. Chapter Two briefly reviews literatures on textbook, its functions, and its assessment, and a detailed account on the development of college English textbooks. Chapter Three provides the main theoretical foundations to support the whole study. In Chapter Four, body part, comparison between two sets of college English course book is made from different aspects. And the last chapter implies what factors the next generation course material should take into consideration.
