This thesis mainly aims to improve vocabulary-building approaches in English-Chinese learner's dictionaries (ECLDs) in order to help Chinese learners of English enlarge their vocabulary from the psycholinguistic perspective. A limited vocabulary is often an obstacle to L2 learners in complicated language activities. However, by far most foreign language teaching and learning approaches, especially vocabulary learning approaches, have just focused on external factors, rather than on internal factors—mental lexicon. As the most authoritative tool in language learning, learner's dictionaries should explore the mental lexicon to help users enrich vocabulary in a most efficient way. Based on the analysis of vocabulary building information in mainstream English learner's dictionaries (ELDs) from the psycholinguistic perspective, this study attempts to put forward some relevant suggestions for ECLDs .Vocabulary building, vocabulary building approaches and mental lexicon are introduced, with three approaches chosen as the basis for analyzing English learner's dictionaries. The qualitative method is adopted to analyze how mainstream ELDs help users enrich their vocabulary, and finally suggestions for ECLDs are given. This proposed study will not only explore the vocabulary building approaches in ECLDs from new theoretical perspectives, but also provide practical vocabulary building approaches for Chinese learners of English. Thus, it deserves our full attention. After the tentative suggestions, the thesis ends with some limitations of the study and with suggestions for further study.?... |
