Xiao Qian was a renowned writer, journalist and translator. As a writer, he has been much researched. As a translator, he is accredited as the translator of Ulysses. However, less critical attention has been given to his self-translations.This thesis first addresses the research on Xiao Qian and academic interest in self-translation. It then introduces the life and times of Xiao Qian, his poetics of literature and translation. At last, it analyses the flexible strategies in his self-translations.Xiao Qian's poetics of literature and translation and his self-translations are closely connected. He regards literature as expression of life and his self-translation is the reinforcement of his expression of life. Self-translation is the continuation of his creative writing and serves as an alternative to his writing. It is hoped that this study of Xiao Qian's self-translations will bring some insight into both Xiao Qian and his self-translation.
