Translation is a sort of transformation between languages and an intercultural communication;it is viewed as a bridge linking two cultures,it has to deal with not only the linguistic problems but also the cultural factors embodied in a language.Different from linguistic analyses and textual comparison,cultural translation studies are more concerned with cultural factors,they are the combination of translation studies and cultural studies.The frequent use of Chinese culture-loaded words has constituted one of the major features of Lu Xun's short stories.These culture-loaded words are the direct reflections of the unique features of Chinese culture.However,due to the different language and culture in Chinese and English there are no English equivalents for these culture-loaded words. Therefore,they are one of the most difficult points and major barriers in translation,and it is a great challenge for the translators to render them properly to help the target readers get a better understanding of them and thus to promote cross-culture communication.This paper is a tentative study of the treatment of the culture-loaded words in Lu Xun's short stories from the perspective of culture.It researches on the two English translated versions of Lu Xun's short stories by means of foreignization and domestication strategy.One version was published in 1972 by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang,and the other one was published in 1990 by William A.Lyell,an American sinologist.This paper aims at studying how the two versions successfully cross cultural barriers,how they reconstruct and compensate cultural defaults,and what strategies and methods the translators adopt in translating these culture-loaded words.According to the analysis of the translation of the culture-loaded words in four of Lu Xun's short stories,the author finds that the translators of both versions mainly adopt the strategy of foreignization and domestication is used as a necessary but complementary or subsidiary strategy. |
