This thesis mainly concerns the subjectivity of the characters in Sula. It analyzes the loss and reconstruction of black females'subjectivity, and explores the important role played by the black community in the reconstruction of female subjectivity. Firstly, it examines the loss of African American females'subjectivity. There are mainly two reasons responsible, including the erosion of white culture and the influence of family. Then, it analyzes the awakening and reconstruction of African American females'subjectivity. This paper examines the different seeking stages of three generations. At last, this thesis explores the relation between black female self and black community and it studies Sula's tragedy and possible solution. Sula's tragedy is caused by her failure to connect with the black community and traditional culture. By becoming superwomen, who can realize self values while maintaining their traditional roles, the African American females can rebuild their subjectivity successfully.
