Comparative Study Of Chinese And Western Clothes Pleat Forming Shape

In the nowadays'garment design and production, clothes pleat not only serves as pure clothing technology, but also become an important element of clothing model and aesthetics, and are deduced by the designers in individualized languages. Throughout its history, clothes pleat has been playing a very important role in either Chinese or western clothing development course. Clothes pleat develops from "Natural pleat" to "Deliberate pleat", and serves as key element combining practicability and aesthetics, and plays the double roles of improving clothes functions and reflecting aesthetic spirit. Tracing back the history of pleat craft development, it can be found that there is big difference on the representation forms of Chinese and Western clothes pleat. This paper tries to compare the differences between Chinese and Western clothes pleats in terms of forming shape, and to summarize different forming methods of Chinese and Western clothes pleat, and unscramble the different cultural spirits implied in the differences.The paper, in six parts, first probes into the attributes of the clothes pleat, including natural attribute, functional attribute, aesthetic attribute and social attribute; and then classifies the clothes pleat according to production technology and forming shape; then probes into the difference of Chinese and Western clothes pleat shape and forming methods, as well as cultural spirit behind the difference; finally draws conclusion, and sums up the respective aesthetic characteristics of Chinese and Western clothes pleat.The differences of Chinese and Western countries in terms of the shape, aesthetics characteristic and forming methods of clothes pleat, reflects the different spiritual connotation and aesthetic orientation of the two kinds of culture. Therefore, studying clothes pleat's forming shape and unscrambling cultural spirit behind it, will help us to better understand and apply this key element. This study is designed to offer theoretical reference for better applying this element in modern garment design, and is of realistic significance to the development of modern garment design.
