On The Translation Of Chinese Classical Poetry From The Perspective Of Cognitive Grammar

Chinese classical poetry is the crown of Chinese literature. It is terse in language, abstruse in meaning and rich in image and also famous for its beauty in form. It's just because of its charm that attracts so many scholars dedicating to translate it into different languages. And many people explore into how to succeed in rendering the Chinese classical poetry from different angles. The aim of the thesis is to explore the translation of Chinese classical poetry from the perspective of cognitive grammar founded by R.W.Langacker.The thesis falls into four chapters:The first chapter is literature review of poetry translation. It has three parts. In the first part attention is directed to three issues. The second part is about image in poetry. The image transmitting is vital to the poetry translation. The third part is to review the poetry translation from the perspective of linguistics abroad and home.Chapter two is to explore the feasibility of applying cognitive grammar to the analysis of poetry translation. It is divided into two parts. The first part has a brief introduction to cognitive grammar. Cognitive grammar considers language to be indissociable from other facets of human cognition. Construal is an important concept in cognitive grammar. The second part talks about the feasibility. Translation is the transformation of different languages. Linguistics is a study of language; it can offer some value for translation. And cognitive grammar is such a useful grammar theory that can be valuable to translation studies.The Third chapter is the core. It analyzes English versions of Chinese classical poetry from three aspects of cognitive grammar. They are levels of specificity, summary scanning and sequential scanning, and tense. Choosing different levels of specificity on the word level will cause different images on the translation. Preserving the dynamic image and static image of the original is of great importance. On the sentence and syntax level, we talk about tense issue in translating process by resorting to Langacker's remarks about tense. Different tense choice imposes different image on the target text.The fourth chapter is conclusion. We can get the conclusion that the theory of cognitive grammar can offer a new perspective to the analysis of translation of Chinese classical poetry.
