The awareness of tramping in Chinese literature since"new age"is worth of attention for its being a sort of modern awareness. The history of"modernity"can be traced back to the emergence of"China's problems"since late Qing dynasty as well as is directly and closely related to the specific language context of Chinese history and culture since the"new age". Observation and study of this literature phenomenon means a phase of inspection and collation of Chinese literature since the 20th century.This essay is divided into the following three parts: introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction part focuses on elaborating modernity element of tramping awareness in Chinese literature since the"new age"—that is why the awareness of tramping is regarded as one sort of modern awareness. Firstly, because it is an expression of modern individual outlook, whose evolution process is obviously or covertly inheriting from tramping awareness in modern Chinese literature, between which there is a modern co-existing relationship. The evolution of modern individual outlook in China represents a phase characteristics. The tramping awareness in Chinese literature reemerges and develops after the construction of a new type of individual outlook since the"new age". Secondly, tendency of"history"and non-history on the basis of ideology is also one of the modern elements as well as the modern thought background that cannot be ignored. The body part consists three chapters. According to the clue of Bei Dao, Zhang Chengzhi and Zhang Wei, the first chapter analyses the tramping awareness and phenomenon of idealism, romanticism and heroes in the language context of a particular phase of history. Taking the cases of writers like Wang Shuo, Zhu Wen, Bai Qiao and so on, the second chapter exposes the popular city tramping novels since the late 1980s till now, in which the source of vagabond custom and hooligan language can be found and they both have exerted a profound influence on literature. The third chapter takes writer Gao Xingjian for example to mainly elaborate the outlook of political exile. The conclusion part summarizes both meaning and cultural connotation of the research on modernity of tramping awareness.
