The 24 gods' colour sculpture in the Great Hall of Shanhua Temple, which is located in Datong, Shanxi Province, is the outstanding example of royal Buddhism colour sculpture in Jin Dynasty. Their flower patterns on clothes are so exquisite that lotus pattern is the typical. What we would focus on is exploring the original form and character of lotus pattern in Jin Dynasty, whereas there are some obstacles in our research, since Lotus pattern has developed for nearly 900 years and changed several times accompany with the development of colour sculpture. As a result, we should analyses the situation of varieties of lotus pattern in 24 gods' colour sculpture in the Great Hall of Shanhua Temple and compare them with the congener in other periods, in order to find the character of lotus pattern in Jin Dynasty. This paper will focus on finding the aesthetic meaning of Lotus pattern in Jin Dynasty.The first chapter of this paper is the material collection. On the base of several fieldworks, we will use archaeological theory to classify the photos. The second chapter will focus on the character of lotus pattern of colour sculpture and painting in Shanhua Temple. We will explore the origins and development of lotus pattern by doing the research on ancient books, previous articles and photos. Finally, the paper will trace the historical reasons and aesthetic connotation from artistic aspect.
