| It is true that accuracy is and should be the primary and fundamental requirement in news reporting which takes accuracy, brevity and clarity as its main focuses, but it is not the reason to deny the legitimate existence of fuzzy language in news, as accuracy doesn't equal precision, and as one of the inherent attributes of language, fuzziness does exist in each style of English, including journalistic English. Using fuzzy language does not suggest one's linguistic incompetence, nor interfere with our communication, whereas sometimes even helps to achieve better communicative effects.During the past decades, lots of experts and scholars both home and abroad have done numerous researches into fuzzy language and news translation. After comprehensive study of relevant books and papers, the author finds there are two aspects that are worth further research: (1) Fuzzy language studies in China mainly focused on fuzzy semantics discussion and rested only on the lexical layer, therefore there still exists large vacancy in the study of pragmatic fuzziness in news; (2) The two most concerned and most heatedly discussed translation theories, i.e. functional equivalence theory and relevance theory, has its own merits and limitations, and these limitations prevent the two theories from powerfully guide the translating practice of fuzzy language in news. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a more effective approach, in which the merits of the two theories will still be remained, and in which the two theories can compensate each other and be better improved.The author attempts to apply Cooperative Principle, Relevance Theory and Politeness Principle to the pragmatic analysis of fuzzy language in news. After detailed analysis, the author points out that proper use of fuzzy language in news leads to better communication effect and further listed several positive pragmatic functions, such as increasing the creditability, adding vividness and liveliness, enhancing self-protection for reporters, avoiding arbitrariness, catering to the readers'cognitive habits, avoiding negative communication effect, and achieving politeness in news reporting. Relevance and equivalence are the souls of interpreting and expressing respectively and optimal equivalence is the ultimate goal of news translation. Only the organic unity of relevance and equivalence can make optimal equivalence be fulfilled. After careful comparison between functional equivalence theory and relevance theory, the author holds that the two theories can be and should be united together to give birth to a more practical approach, namely optimal relevance-optimal equivalence approach, in order to better guide the translation practice of fuzzy language in news.This thesis holds that the optimal relevance-optimal equivalence approach will bring news translation theory and practice into harmony and reach optimum of equivalence. The thesis further suggests some specific tactics for translating fuzzy language in news, such as fuzzy expression vs. fuzzy expression, accurate expression vs. fuzzy expression, condensing fuzzy ideas into four- character Chinese phrases, turning fuzzy expression into sentence, etc. |
