Pragmatic enrichment, both narrowing and broadening, is conducive to comprehending and reconstructing meanings in light of context, therefore is crucial to translation - a process being defined in a context-dependent, cognitive and pragmatic manner. Business translation is moreover a case in point by synthesizing such indispensable dimensions as language competence, business awareness and communicative success together, thus is posing a demanding task of preciseness, appropriateness and effectiveness. This research, drawing upon the previous studies and insights, proposes a novel four-dimensional pragmatic enrichment strategic translation model. This model, backed up by the principle of optimal relevance, employs both pragmatic narrowing and pragmatic broadening as translation strategies to deal with two core concerns, namely attempt (content) and attitude (manner), of business English correspondence translation and hence to realize such purposes as fixing on referent, avoiding ambiguity, providing appropriate amount of information, enhancing textual flexibility as well as sharpening business elegance. This study adopts a text analytical method plus a questionnaire survey with revealing statistics to test out the null hypothesis and preliminary efficacy of the proposed translation model. From setting up theoretical framework to carrying out analytical steps, all efforts are set to work out the specific questions raised for this research, that is, what pragmatic narrowing/broadening strategies can be employed to effect business English correspondence translation as an attempt/attitude effort? A number of authentic foreign trade letters are put under the pragmatic enrichment strategic translation model for comparing, discussing, analyzing, data collecting, SPSS-aided processing and statistics interpreting. This thesis concludes, through qualitative discussion and quantitative analysis, that a comprehensive application of pragmatic enrichment strategies to business English correspondence translation could lead to a panoramic and professional translated product, precise and persuasive in attempt while prudent and polite in attitude. By suggesting such a strategic model for improving business English correspondence writing and translating, this research intends to be of some guiding significance in practical or pedagogical sense.
