Fuzhou Lacquerwork is a handcraft pattern of distinct folk style and unique local characteristics, which ranks in the three Chinese craftwork patterns together with Beijing cloisonne and Jiangxi Jingdezheng porcelain. It also ranks in the three Fuzhou handcraft patterns together with Fuzhou paper umbrella and Fuzhou ox horn comb, the same as in the three Fuzhou distinct craftworks which includes Fuzhou Shoushang stone and Fuzhou cork painting. Fuzhou lacquerwork was selected by the State Department of China into the catalog of State Non-substantial Cultural Heritage on May 20,2006.During Qianlong reign period in Qing dynasty, Fuzhou lacquerwork came into being in the hands of Mr. Shen Shao'an, a Fuzhou local. It has hereafter been enjoying well-known fame in and out of China, due to its magnificent color, slim shape and delicate patterns. Undoubtedly, Fuzhou local cultures, such as customs, geographic features, religion and overseas sail trade, have a profound affect in Fuzhou lacquerwork which was born and innovated in Fuzhou. Fuzhou lacquerwork is a crystallized sign of our ancestors' wisdom, and an outcome of multi cultures. Hence the study of Fuzhou lacquerwork is the base of its proctection and development.On the basis of plenty onsite review, this article aims to answers to build a nutritional environment for current development of Fuzhou lacquerwork. Besides, the article attempts to suggest new ideas concerning its innovation and its renaissance. There are five parts in this article: the preface, which introduces the background, points and targets of study; the geographic culture of Fuzhou, which includes the narration of local customs, geographic features, religion and overseas sail trade history; the artistic features and industrial history; the impact on lacquerwork imposed by local geographic cultures; the takeover and the innovation of traditional Fuzhou lacquerwork.This article is written in a hope of building some accessible modern industrial patterns for the good of current Fuzhou lacquerwork.
